One of the most striking features of mass shootings such as in Sandy Hook, is that the attacks don't make any sense, at least not on the surface. These are not people with a political agenda. There is no financial gain. They are not acts of revenge against specific individuals. Often they end up committing suicide, so again absolutely nothing is gained. The big question becomes- what is compelling these people to start shooting random citizens including children?
In the 1950's these school shootings were not taking place and they had guns back then and fewer gun regulations, so what has changed? One thing that has changed is the introduction of psychiatric drugs! These drugs are documented in the medical literature to cause violent outbursts and suicides! In the case of many school shootings we have both violent outburst and suicides. In Columbine, the teens murdered other students and then killed themselves. At Sandy Hook followed the exact same pattern, he killed and then committed suicide.
In most of the cases of school and public shootings the perpetrators were on psychiatric or psychotropic drugs such as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil etc! It has now been reported that Adam Lanza, the shooter in Sandy Hook, was receiving treatment for mental health problems which means he probably was on some psychiatric medication. Given this fact, why are politicians screaming about gun control instead of demanding an investigation into what role psychiatric drugs are playing in these school shootings? No amount of gun control will stop a deranged person committed to harming random people. They could create explosives from ingredients found in ordinary stores. They could set a fire, use a knife, ram a car into a crowd etc. Even if schools post armed guards at every entrance, a shoot could attack kids as they are approaching or leaving a school. Unless we get to the root cause of this problem it is not going to go away and is likely to get much worse. Consider the following:
"Fact: Despite 22 international drug regulatory warnings on psychiatric drugs citing effects of mania, hostility, violence and even homicidal ideation, and dozens of high profile shootings/killings tied to psychiatric drug use, there has yet to be a federal investigation on the link between psychiatric drugs and acts of senseless violence.
Fact: At least fourteen recent school shootings were committed by those taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs resulting in 109 wounded and 58 killed (in other school shootings, information about their drug use was never made public—neither confirming or refuting if they were under the influence of prescribed drugs.)
Fact: Between 2004 and 2011, there have been over 11,000 reports to the U.S. FDA’s MedWatch system of psychiatric drug side effects related to violence. These include 300 cases of homicide, nearly 3,000 cases of mania and over 7,000 cases of aggression. Note: By the FDA’s own admission, only 1-10% of side effects are ever reported to the FDA, so the actual number of side effects occurring are most certainly higher."
Another School Shooting, Another Psychiatric Drug? Federal Investigation Long Overdue

On a personal note, I did research on psychotropic drugs years ago and what I uncovered was so terrifying that I strongly felt that no child on such medications should even be allowed to be in the same classroom with non-medicated children. The potential for violence and suicide are simply staggering. Consider this:
"A new study from the Journal of Marital & Family Therapy warns of the dramatic rise in the use of psychotropic medications for children. One in every fifty Americans is now considered permanently disabled by mental illness, and up to eight million children take one or more psychotropic drugs. The authors, James P. Morris, Ph.D. and George Stone, LCSW, state that there is little evidence available to warrant the widespread use of psychotropic drugs for children, and little long term data regarding its long term impact on development."

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, one in five adult Americans are now on at least one psychiatric drug!
"The medicating of Americans for mental illnesses continued to grow over the past decade, with one in five adults now taking at least one psychiatric drug such as antidepressants, antipsychotics and anti-anxiety medications, according to an analysis of pharmacy-claims data."

This means that there are tens of millions of ticking time bombs who can go off at any moment. While mass shootings such as Columbine and Sandy Hook capture the media's attention, there are countless other suicides and acts of violence that take place everyday, but are not reported in the media or the link is not established between a particular psychiatric drug and a murder or suicide. This is what is truly terrifying. Whenever you are on a bus, subway or in any public space, you are literally surrounded by people who are on one psychiatric drug or another, and anyone of those individuals could suddenly decide to go on a violent rampage.
Psychiatric drugs are big business for the pharmaceutical industry. They are raking in billions with these drugs while destabilizing the very fabric of America in the creation of this virtual army of potentially violent and suicidal children and adults.
"Psychiatric medications are among the most widely prescribed and biggest-selling class of drugs in the U.S. In 2010, Americans spent $16.1 billion on antipsychotics to treat depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, $11.6 billion on antidepressants and $7.2 billion on treatment for ADHD, according to IMS Health, which tracks prescription-drug sales."

While we are upset and angry over the murders at Sandy Hook, those feelings should be ultimately directed at getting to the root cause of the problem which means demanding that political leaders conduct a formal investigation into the role that psychiatric drugs play in these school shootings! In addition, there needs to be a discussion over whether psychiatric drugs should be banned altogether. Perhaps if people started suing psychiatrists and drug companies over the harm these drugs have caused then perhaps they will start prescribing far fewer of these drugs.
Any discussions of gun control or increased security at schools are meaningless if the role of psychiatric drugs in these shootings is not thoroughly investigated and publicly debated.
